Over 11,000 tourist booking cancellations to Maldives

Maldives Minister of Tourism has confirmed over 11,000 tourist booking cancellations.

According to Minister Ali Waheed, the tourist booking cancellations to Maldives have hiked in light of the alarming pace at the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) has been spreading across the globe.

Minister Waheed during a press conference at President’s Office claimed the island nation’s government was taking all necessary steps in countering the spread of the disease in the country.

Meanwhile, it was reported several local resorts have been installed with adequate measures in screening and treating patients.

The Ministry of Tourism confirms all operational resorts in Maldives, with the exclusion of just three, have been utilized with medical treatment with accordance to Health Protection Agency (HPA) standards.

Moreover, the exclusions from the list, will have the medical arrangements made soon as per the ministry.

Although the total booking cancellations have risen over 11,000 it was also confirmed the island nation has received a total of over 24,000 tourist bookings from 26 January until 02 February 2020.

The exact total of booking cancellations according to Ministry of Tourism have been recorded at 11,115 while the exact total bookings to Maldives during the aforementioned period was recorded at 24,790.

Though the viral outbreak has shown direct effects on Maldives tourism, Minister of Tourism Ali Waheed claims the tourist arrivals in January 2020 have been stronger than the corresponding period last year.

Tourism statistics confirm the total number of arrivals were recorded at 151,550 in January 2019 whereas in the current year it was recorded at 173,874.
