Hiyaa housing project concludes, handed over to state

Government initiated social housing scheme promises to provide affordable housing for struggling locals living on hefty rents

The mega housing project; Hiyaa, commenced during the administration of former President Yameen Abdul Gayoom, has concluded.

The project’s contractor, China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCE) handed over the completed 7,000 housing units to its proprietor; Maldives government.

This was confirmed in several Chinese local news papers.

According to CSCE, the project which was considered one of the biggest construction projects in Maldives had covered a total of 468,000 square meters of land area.

All 7,000 housing units or flats were constructed into 16 highrise towers at the second phase – land reclaimed area of the satellite town of Hulhumale’.

Meanwhile the current administration, has also commenced on the construction of 4,000 new housing units. Work on the project is expected to officially kick-off sometime in the current year.

Incumbent Maldives president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih during the 2020 presidential address claimed a total of 17,189 forms from applicants seeking sheltering have been screened.

President Solih further attested the living conditions of these applicants were currently being assessed.
