Maldives President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Thursday, has officially dissolved the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development.
As per government’s decision, the ministry in question was in turn ‘absorbed’ into the Ministry of National Planning and Infrastructure.
Moreover, with this change the planning ministry has thus been renamed to Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure.
In addition to this, the cabinet responsibilities of the Minister of Housing has been subsequently transferred to Minister of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure.
Meanwhile, a statement from President’s Office confirmed the employees under the now dissolved ministry will be transferred under the management of the planning ministry.
While the Ministry of Housing was officially dissolved on Thursday, the cabinet minister of the said government body tendered her resignation on Wednesday evening.
On Wednesday evening, Minister of Housing and Urban Development Ms Mariyam Athifa officially tendered her resignation, while some local media reported she stepped down from her duties over worsening health issues.
Earlier, a ruling party member formally requested Maldives Parliament speaker to terminate the minister from her responsibilities over apparent negligence to duty.
