The Maldives and Malaysia have agreed to strengthen cooperation in halal tourism, Muslim-friendly travel and other areas of the tourism industry, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced on Tuesday.

Speaking at a joint press conference following official talks with visiting Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, President Muizzu described tourism as an important link between the peoples of the two countries.

He said both governments had agreed to expand cooperation in tourism, the halal and cultural industries, and Muslim-friendly travel.

The two countries will also work to increase two-way tourist movements, promote eco-tourism and strengthen people-to-people ties.

The discussions extended to broader trade and economic cooperation, with both governments agreeing to begin talks on establishing a Preferential Trade Agreement.

President Muizzu said such an agreement would create further opportunities for businesses in both countries.

He also invited the Malaysian government and private-sector businesses to explore investment opportunities in the Maldives, particularly in renewable energy, digital infrastructure and Islamic finance.

The agreements form part of wider efforts to deepen economic ties between the Maldives and Malaysia while building on the countries’ cultural and religious connections.
