IMF projects Maldives growth to recover to 3.8% in 2027 after weak 2026

The Maldivian economy is projected to grow by 3.8% in 2027, recovering from 1.0% growth in 2026, according to the International Monetary Fund’s World Economic Outlook, October 2026.

The figures measure real GDP growth, which is adjusted for inflation. Even with the recovery, the 2027 forecast is below the 6.3% growth the IMF shows for 2025.

The IMF also expects consumer price inflation to slow to 2.5% in 2027 from 4.0% in 2026. The 2026 figure is itself higher than the 3.5% shown for 2025. Slower inflation does not mean prices will fall, only that they are expected to rise more slowly, which could ease pressure on household budgets and business costs.

The current account deficit, which covers trade, income and transfers with the rest of the world, is projected to narrow to 14.8% of GDP in 2027 from 18.6% in 2026. Even so, it would remain more than double the 6.1% shown for 2025.

The IMF’s figures for 2026 and 2027 are projections and may change as economic conditions evolve. Taken together, they point to a recovery from a weak 2026, with faster growth and slower price increases, although the size of the external deficit remains a significant vulnerability.
