A new stock of MVR 5 banknotes will enter circulation to address a shortage of the denomination.

The Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) will introduce a new stock of MVR 5 banknotes into circulation from tomorrow to address a shortage caused by the deterioration and reduced return of existing notes.
The MMA said the MVR 5 banknote is among the denominations most frequently issued to the public and businesses. High daily usage, together with fewer notes being deposited back to the MMA through commercial banks, led to the depletion of its available stock.
The newly printed banknotes are dated 31 July 2025, corresponding to 6 Safar 1447, and carry the signature of MMA Governor Ahmed Munawar.
According to the MMA, this is the first new stock of MVR 5 banknotes brought in since the “Ran Dhihafaheh” banknote series was introduced in 2017.
The new notes will also feature the Maldivian Rufiyaa symbol and will circulate alongside the MVR 5 banknotes already in use.
