The Maldives completed the repayment of an outstanding USD 50 million Treasury bill obligation in September, with the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) providing foreign currency to the government to facilitate the payment.
The repayment settled the remaining balance of a USD 150 million Treasury bill issued through the State Bank of India (SBI) in 2019 to support the government's budget.
The MMA also continued supplying US dollars to commercial banks during September to facilitate access to foreign currency and ease pressures in the foreign exchange market.
According to the MMA, total foreign currency sales increased by 46.9 percent compared with August, primarily reflecting the government's Treasury bill repayment and continued dollar sales to banks.
Official reserves stood at USD 547 million at the end of September, compared with USD 643.9 million in August, representing a decline of 14.9 percent.
Usable reserves also decreased by 15.4 percent, from USD 200.6 million in August to USD 169.8 million in September.
The MMA attributed the decline in reserves mainly to foreign currency sales exceeding the Authority's total foreign currency receipts during the month.
