The Maldives has been announced as the Official Host Country of ITB Berlin 2027, placing the island nation at the centre of the global travel industry’s largest trade show.
The agreement was formalised during ITB Berlin 2026 when Ibrahim Shiuree, CEO and Managing Director of Visit Maldives (MMPRC), and Dr. Mario Tobias, CEO of Messe Berlin, signed the partnership at the Maldives’ stand in Hall 5.2.
Tobias said the return of the Maldives as host country, ten years after its first appearance in the role, reflects the strong partnership between the destination and the international travel trade platform.
“We are delighted that, ten years after their first appearance as host country, the Maldives will once again take centre stage at ITB Berlin,” Tobias said. “This partnership highlights the Maldives’ prominent role in the global tourism industry. In 2027, we look forward to showcasing the country’s extraordinary beauty and diversity while demonstrating how tourism and sustainability can go hand in hand.”
With more than 1,000 islands, turquoise lagoons, white sandy beaches and vibrant coral reefs, the Maldives is widely regarded as one of the world’s most iconic long-haul destinations. Tourism offerings range from luxury resorts and boutique properties to diving, water sports, wellness retreats and cultural experiences on local islands.
Shiuree said the global travel trade show provides an important opportunity to promote the country’s tourism offerings.
“ITB Berlin provides us with the ideal platform to showcase the unique experiences our islands offer to travellers from around the world,” he said. “We look forward to welcoming the global tourism industry in Berlin and highlighting the diversity, quality and hospitality that define the Maldives as a destination.”
The announcement also comes shortly after Mohamed Muizzu, President of the Maldives, visited Berlin and met with the Frank-Walter Steinmeier, President of Germany, highlighting the strategic importance of the Maldives in bilateral and international engagement.
Meanwhile, the Maldivian government has designated 2027 as “Visit Maldives Year”, a national tourism initiative aimed at strengthening the country’s global tourism presence. Announced by President Muizzu, the campaign will include international marketing activities, participation in major travel events, roadshows and digital campaigns promoting the Maldives’ natural beauty, culture and hospitality.
As host country, the Maldives will organise the official opening gala of ITB Berlin on 15 March 2027, followed by a series of events from 16 to 18 March 2027, including cultural performances, networking sessions, press activities and a national pavilion showcasing the country’s tourism products.
The role as host country is expected to strengthen the Maldives’ ties with the German and wider European travel markets while placing the destination firmly in the spotlight of the global tourism industry.
