The Maldives and Pakistan have set a target to increase annual bilateral trade from US$13.9 million to US$200 million within the next two years, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced.
Speaking at a joint press conference following official talks during President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s state visit to Pakistan, Sharif said current trade volumes remained well below the economic potential of the two countries.
The two sides signed 20 memorandums of understanding covering areas including trade, defence, healthcare, capacity building and digital infrastructure.
Under the agreements, Pakistan will provide technical assistance to support the Maldives’ efforts to establish data centres in Malé and the atolls. The two sides also agreed on support for Maldivian students studying at medical universities in Pakistan.
Sharif pledged close coordination to ensure the agreements are implemented, as both countries seek to expand trade and strengthen bilateral cooperation.
