The opening of a dedicated Calm Room at Velana International Airport (VIA) marks a significant milestone in the airport's journey toward inclusive service, Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed said on Sunday.
Speaking at the inauguration of the facility at VIA Terminal 1, Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed said MACL remains committed to ensuring that all passengers receive reliable services with dignity, equity and respect.
The Calm Room, developed under MACL's Boli initiative, is a sensory-friendly space designed to support passengers with non-visible disabilities and others who may require a quieter and more comfortable airport environment. The facility caters to individuals with sensory sensitivities, anxiety, autism and other non-visible conditions, helping them navigate the airport experience with greater comfort and confidence.
Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed described the initiative as an important step in enhancing accessibility and inclusivity at the country's main international gateway.
“This is a significant milestone in VIA’s journey toward inclusive service,” he said. “Our goal is to ensure that every passenger receives reliable services with dignity, equity and respect.”
During the ceremony, the MACL CEO & Managing Director thanked Autism Care Maldives and the Maldives Autism Association for their technical guidance and support in establishing the facility.
He also highlighted the company’s plans to introduce similar services at VIA’s Terminal 2 and the Seaplane Terminal as part of its broader efforts to create a more accessible travel experience.
The Calm Room reflects MACL’s continued commitment to building a caring, passenger-focused airport environment and advancing inclusive travel for all airport users.
