MIRA introduces mechanism to offset outstanding dues against government receivables

The Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) has introduced a mechanism allowing outstanding amounts owed to the authority to be settled against payments due to taxpayers from Government institutions and state-owned enterprises.

Under the newly published policy, eligible parties may request that amounts they are due to receive from a Government institution or SOE be applied towards outstanding amounts payable to MIRA.

Before an offset is processed, the amount claimed as receivable must be verified. Receivables from Government institutions will be confirmed through the Ministry of Finance and Public Enterprises, while amounts due from SOEs will be verified with the relevant company.

Where an offset is applied, outstanding liabilities will be settled in order, beginning with the principal amount, followed by fines and then interest.

The offset will take effect once the relevant Government institution or SOE transfers the approved amount to MIRA.

The measure follows an announcement by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu at the Maldives Expo 2026 awards ceremony that arrangements had been finalised to allow SMEs to offset unpaid government dues against taxes owed to the state.
