Maldivian opens Beijing office to strengthen China market presence

National carrier Maldivian has opened a new office in Beijing as it expands its commercial presence in China, the Maldives’ largest tourism source market.

The office was officially opened on 26 October and will provide the airline with a dedicated base to work more closely with travel agents, commercial partners and customers in the Chinese market.

Maldivian also held a China roadshow alongside the opening, organised with MegaCap, its General Sales Agent in China, with participation and support from Visit Maldives Corporation.

The event brought together representatives from the tourism, travel and aviation sectors, with discussions covering destination promotion as well as opportunities in passenger and cargo services.

Maldivian Managing Director Ibrahim Iyas said the Beijing office would bring the airline closer to its partners and travellers in one of the Maldives’ most important tourism markets.

The expansion follows Maldivian’s introduction of its first Airbus A330-200 wide-body aircraft in January 2025, which enabled the airline to operate direct services to Beijing, Shanghai and Chengdu.

China remains the Maldives’ largest tourist source market, accounting for around 19% of arrivals so far this year.
