International Airport (VIA) has exported 1,000 tons of cargo through its
Sea-to-Air Cargo Transshipment service.
With Virgin
Atlantic joining the service yesterday, a total of 12 airlines now participates
in this logistics solution, which streamlines the transfer of goods brought by
sea through Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) to their final destinations by air.
Other participating airlines include Turkish Airlines, Qatar Airways, Emirates,
Aeroflot, Neos, Gulf Air, Discover Airlines, Condor, and British Airways.
Introduced in
May, the service initially catered to garment shipments imported by sea from
Bangladesh. MACL notes that the growing participation of airlines will further
enhance VIA’s role in global cargo connectivity, boosting its contribution to
the Maldivian economy.
The
state-of-the-art cargo terminal at VIA, developed to international standards,
is equipped to handle diverse logistics needs. MACL reiterated its commitment
to delivering secure and comprehensive services aligned with global benchmarks.
This
collaboration between MACL and MPL positions VIA as a significant hub in the
international cargo logistics chain, showcasing the Maldives’ potential as a
key player in the sector.
