The Government has proposed a MVR 59.7 billion state budget for 2027, positioning it as a foundation for the Maldives’ longer-term development vision towards 2040.
Minister of Finance and Public Enterprises Hassan Zareer presented the MVR 59,704,440,795 budget to the People’s Majlis on Thursday.
The proposed budget is MVR 4.5 billion lower than the budget approved for 2026.
Presenting the budget, Zareer said its key priorities include maintaining macroeconomic stability, strengthening fiscal and debt sustainability, and laying the groundwork for policies required to support the country’s development ambitions through 2040.
He said the Government intends to pursue these objectives through a National Development Plan that will guide investments and policy priorities over the coming years.
The approach includes increasing state revenue, securing external financing on a sustainable basis, strengthening the planning and implementation of public investments, and improving the use of state resources.
The Government’s 2040 vision includes modern infrastructure and transport systems, improved healthcare and education, comprehensive social protection and wider access to opportunities.
Zareer also highlighted the Ras Malé Waterfront and Marina Bay Project as one of the major developments expected to support the longer-term economic agenda.
He said the project has the potential to increase state revenue, contribute to economic diversification and support progress in renewable energy, while creating new opportunities for Maldivians.
The Minister said the 2027 budget is intended to strengthen the country’s economic foundations while prioritising investments aimed at improving living standards and expanding public services.
He added that the Government’s longer-term development plans would be pursued while protecting national identity, unity, independence and sovereignty.
