Vilimalé and Gulhifalhu have been physically connected under the Thilamalé Bridge project following the installation of the final bridge segment between the two islands.
The milestone was reached on Friday, extending the completed bridge structure from Malé through Vilimalé to Gulhifalhu.
The Malé–Vilimalé section was physically connected in August, with construction subsequently progressing towards Gulhifalhu.
Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Dr Abdulla Muththalib said the latest milestone brings the project closer to completing the wider connection between Malé, Vilimalé, Gulhifalhu and Thilafushi.
More than 80% of the overall Thilamalé Bridge project has now been completed. Work currently includes the installation of bridge deck segments, with a large proportion of the 1,222 segments required for the deck already cast.
The 6.7-kilometre bridge forms part of the Greater Malé Connectivity Project and is being constructed by Indian contractor Afcons Infrastructure Limited.
The USD 500 million project is financed through a USD 400 million line of credit from the Export-Import Bank of India and a USD 100 million grant from the Government of India.
Once completed, the bridge will provide a direct road connection between Malé, Vilimalé, Gulhifalhu and Thilafushi, linking key residential, industrial and commercial areas within the Greater Malé region.
