Government Expands Trade Outreach to Asia and Africa Amid Supply Diversification Push

The government has intensified efforts to expand trade relations with countries across Asia and Africa as part of a broader strategy to diversify import sources and strengthen economic resilience.

Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed said at a press conference held at the President’s Office that the Maldives is actively building new trade partnerships in response to ongoing geopolitical uncertainties affecting traditional supply routes.

He highlighted the Free Trade Agreement with China, noting that its implementation is currently underway and positioning China as a key partner for sourcing a wide range of goods. The Minister said China’s role as a major manufacturing hub provides the Maldives with access to diversified supply channels, supported by ongoing engagement with the Chinese Ministry of Commerce.

Saeed further stated that efforts are being scaled up to strengthen trade ties with Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Cambodia, while also exploring new commercial relationships with countries where trade links have previously been limited.

The government is also engaging with African nations to expand cooperation across multiple economic sectors, marking a strategic shift towards broader geographic diversification in trade.

In parallel, the Ministry of Economic Development is working with the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation to improve connectivity, including efforts to enhance maritime and air links. This includes ongoing discussions to introduce operations by African airlines to the Maldives.

The initiatives form part of a wider policy direction aimed at reducing dependency on traditional import markets while improving supply chain resilience and trade flexibility in a shifting global environment.
