The challenges facing small island economies in managing foreign exchange reserves amid global economic uncertainty were highlighted by Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) Governor Ahmed Munawar at a regional forum in Hanoi, Vietnam.
Munawar delivered a presentation titled “Trends and Challenges in Reserve Management in Times of Geopolitical and Macroeconomic Uncertainty” at the Asian Development Bank’s (ADB) 2026 Asian Regional Forum on Investment Management of Foreign Exchange Reserves.
Drawing on the Maldives’ experience, he outlined the challenges faced by small island developing states, including their exposure to external economic shocks, rising import costs and pressures on foreign exchange reserves.
He emphasised the importance of maintaining adequate liquidity buffers, strengthening policy coordination and adopting flexible reserve management strategies to navigate an increasingly uncertain global economic environment.
Rushaha Ahmed Shareef, Senior Manager of the MMA’s Foreign Exchange Division, also participated in the forum.
