President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has established a new state-owned company dedicated to the procurement and distribution of pharmaceuticals and medical supplies, transferring responsibilities that had long been managed by the State Trading Organization (STO).
The President’s
Office announced today that the State Pharmaceutical and Medical Supply
Corporation Ltd has been formed under Article 15 of the Companies Act as a 100
percent government-owned company. According to the announcement, the
corporation will handle the import of medicines, medical consumables, and
equipment in bulk, and ensure their nationwide distribution.
The creation of
the corporation marks a significant restructuring of the medical supply chain
in the country, as STO had previously overseen the import and supply of
pharmaceuticals. The government stated that the dedicated company will allow
for more streamlined operations and ensure that essential medical supplies are
more efficiently and reliably available across all regions of the Maldives.
With the
establishment of the State Pharmaceutical and Medical Supply Corporation, the
administration aims to strengthen healthcare delivery by improving
accessibility, affordability, and timely supply of essential medicines and
equipment to hospitals, health centres, and pharmacies throughout the nation.
