Anwar to Consult Petronas on Oil Exploration in the Maldives

The Malaysian prime minister said the state-owned energy company has the expertise and international experience to assess exploration opportunities in the country.

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has said he will hold discussions with Petronas on the possibility of conducting oil exploration in the Maldives.

Anwar made the announcement at a joint press conference with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu following official bilateral talks held during his visit to the Maldives.

The Malaysian prime minister said Petronas had demonstrated its technical capabilities through operations in several countries and could send specialists to the Maldives to explore potential opportunities.

He identified Canada, Brazil, Peru, Turkmenistan, Sudan and Suriname as some of the countries in which the Malaysian state-owned energy company operates.

Considering the company’s expertise and international presence, Anwar said he did not anticipate significant difficulties in arranging for Petronas specialists to travel to the Maldives for exploration-related work.

Anwar also noted that President Muizzu had raised several requests during their bilateral discussions. He said the Malaysian government would work to address the matters presented by the Maldives.
