Velana Airport Warns of Congestion as Hajj Pilgrims Return on June 5, 7, 8, and 9

Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) is advising all travelers to expect heavy congestion at Velana International Airport on June 5, 7, 8, and 9, as Hajj pilgrims return from Saudi Arabia this week.

The airport operator said a large number of pilgrims, family members, and receivers are expected to arrive at the airport during those dates. Parking will be limited, and traffic conditions are likely to be difficult. MACL is urging travelers to use public ferry or bus services instead of private vehicles when heading to the airport on those days.

"Special arrangements have been made for the occasion," MACL said in a passenger advisory. The company said it appreciates the understanding and cooperation of all travelers during this period.

Background: Four Flights Carried Maldivian Pilgrims to Saudi Arabia

This year's Hajj season saw Maldivian pilgrims depart Velana International Airport on four dedicated charter flights. Two flights were operated by Maldivian and two by Saudia under the Makkah Route Initiative, with departures scheduled on May 15, 17, 18, and 19.

The first Saudia flight, which departed on May 15, carried 242 pilgrims. Buses transported pilgrims to the departure zone in front of the former domestic terminal. For those departing on May 17, 18, and 19, buses dropped passengers at the Terminal 2 drop-off zone, with the designated waiting area located at the Terminal 2 Concourse area.

The arrangements were coordinated jointly by MACL, the Ministry of Islamic Affairs and Endowments, and the Maldives Hajj Corporation, along with other relevant authorities, to ensure a smooth departure experience for pilgrims.

Makkah Route Initiative Streamlines Hajj Travel

The Maldives has been included in Saudi Arabia's Makkah Route Initiative, which allows pilgrims to complete immigration, customs, and health procedures in their home country before departure. Under this arrangement, Maldivian pilgrims complete all immigration, visa, biometric, health, and security procedures in the Maldives before departure, significantly reducing wait times and processing delays upon arrival in Jeddah or Medina.

At Velana International Airport, pilgrims receive boarding passes at the dedicated Hajj terminal, with luggage tagged and transferred directly to hotels in Saudi Arabia.

The initiative was made permanent following a decision by the Supreme Committee responsible for overseeing it. Minister Dr. Shaheem expressed gratitude to MACL, Customs, Immigration, aviation security teams, and Saudi authorities for their cooperation in facilitating the service.

Travelers heading to Velana International Airport on June 5, 7, 8, and 9 are asked to plan ahead and allow additional time. MACL recommends ferry and bus services as the preferred alternatives to reduce congestion at the airport.
