The Ministry of Finance and Planning and Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) have officially signed an agreement to develop an airport in Th. Guraidhoo, marking a significant step toward improving connectivity and economic growth in the region.
The agreement
was formalized last night during a special ceremony held in Guraidhoo as part
of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s visit to the island. MACL’s CEO and Managing
Director, Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, signed the agreement on behalf of the
company, while Finance Minister Moosa Zameer represented the ministry.
Addressing
residents at the event, President Muizzu highlighted the strategic importance
of the project, describing the new airport as a vital gateway for both
Guraidhoo and the wider region. He assured that with land reclamation for the
project already completed, the airport development will be finalized within 22
months.
The Guraidhoo
airport project is part of the government’s broader pledge to expand aviation
infrastructure across the Maldives, aimed at enhancing regional connectivity,
boosting tourism, and creating new economic opportunities for local
communities.
This agreement
signals renewed momentum in the government’s infrastructure development agenda,
with residents of Guraidhoo and neighboring islands anticipating the
transformative impact the airport is expected to bring.
