Samsung Electronics America, known as SEA, handles sales and marketing of Samsung Electronics' displays, phones, TVs and home appliances in the United States, and employs about 1,200 workers in New Jersey, according to a September 2025 press release from U.S. Representative Josh Gottheimer, whose district includes Englewood Cliffs.

In a statement to Reuters, Samsung said the affected unit is separate from its semiconductor business and is preparing to move its headquarters from New Jersey to Texas. The 739 affected roles are tied to plans by Samsung Electronics America, which is focused on consumer electronics and does not include chips, to move its headquarters to Texas.

The company described the changes in general terms. Samsung said the process may lead to changes in workforce structure, including employees who are unable to relocate or functions that are optimized to align roles with key business priorities.

Samsung said most staff in New Jersey were offered the chance to relocate to Texas, and it disputed calling the changes layoffs outright. A majority of people affected have received relocation offers, but others were let go, the company said, without elaborating. Samsung did not specify how many positions would ultimately be eliminated.

A separate Samsung affiliate is also cutting jobs in New Jersey. Samsung's IT services affiliate, Samsung SDS America, has flagged that 179 roles could be cut at Ridgefield Park, New Jersey, according to a June notice required under state law. Samsung said those personnel changes are due to the relocation of Samsung SDS' North American headquarters and are not related to layoffs or restructuring.

WARN notices are required under U.S. federal law when employers plan mass layoffs or plant closures, giving state officials and workers advance notice of job losses. The federal law requires companies with 100 or more employees to provide 60 days' advance notice before mass layoffs or plant closures.

Some reports have described Samsung's Texas move as part of a wider corporate trend, with other large companies also relocating operations to the state in recent years, citing factors such as lower taxes.

The New Jersey cuts add to a broader wave of layoffs affecting the state this year, spanning telecommunications, retail, and pharmaceutical companies, according to state WARN filings tracked by local media.

Samsung has not announced an effective date for the New Jersey reductions or detailed severance arrangements. The filing reviewed by Reuters did not include additional information beyond the New Jersey headcount figure.
