The Minister of
Islamic Affairs, Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, revealed important changes to
the distribution of Fitr Zakat for the year 1446. In his statement, Dr. Shaheem
explained that this year, Fitr Zakat would be distributed equally among all
individuals listed on the registry of those in need, ensuring that each person
on the list will receive MVR 4500.
This adjustment
aims to promote greater social justice in the distribution of Zakat.
Previously, the amount distributed varied by island, with some islands
receiving less, which left certain individuals with inadequate support. This
year’s approach, however, ensures that the entire nation is considered as a
whole, allowing for a more balanced distribution of resources.
As of now, MVR
12.4 million has already been collected for Fitr Zakat this year. Dr. Shaheem noted
that this change marks a historic first in the Maldives, signaling a major
shift in the way Zakat is allocated to help those in need.
The new model
ensures fairness and aims to provide consistent support to the most vulnerable
members of society across the country.
