Portal Registration Made Mandatory for Fishing Vessel Fuel Subsidy

According to the ministry, the additional subsidy is being provided alongside the government’s existing programme, introduced in 2019, to supply duty-free diesel to fishing vessels.

The Ministry of Fisheries has made registration through its “Fahi Hakatha Portal” mandatory for fishing vessels seeking the additional fuel subsidy introduced following the sharp rise in global oil prices caused by the Middle East conflict.

In a circular issued today, the ministry said the requirement was introduced to strengthen the administration of the fuel subsidy scheme. Previously, the subsidy was provided to all licensed fishing vessels without requiring them to submit a request through the portal.

“Therefore, all vessels engaged in tuna fishing that are not registered on the Ministry’s Fahi Hakatha Portal are requested to register by September 15, 2026,” the circular stated.

According to the ministry, the additional subsidy is being provided alongside the government’s existing programme, introduced in 2019, to supply duty-free diesel to fishing vessels.

The latest subsidy was introduced after the conflict between the United States and Iran disrupted oil supplies and drove up global fuel prices. Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz further affected supplies, causing fuel prices to rise sharply and making it increasingly difficult for fishing vessels to afford trips to sea.
