Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has commenced a six-week Airport Fire and Rescue Services Vehicle Operator Course at Velana International Airport (VIA), with 26 participants enrolled in the programme.
The course focuses on enhancing the operational capability and professional development of airport fire and rescue personnel. It is the latest in a series of structured training efforts by MACL to strengthen emergency preparedness at the country's main international gateway.
On 12 April 1966, MACL established its Airport Rescue and Firefighting Service, making it the country's first fire service. It is today the largest aerodrome firefighting service in the Maldives, operating in accordance with standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

The vehicle operator course builds on a pattern of sustained investment in fire and rescue capacity at VIA. That training effort followed a major infrastructure milestone at the airport. In June 2024, Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef and MACL Managing Director and CEO Ibrahim Shareef inaugurated a new fire station at VIA. The 2,230 square foot facility includes a dedicated control room, a training area, changing rooms, and washrooms, along with two major fire tenders, one command vehicle, two marine vessels, and a water tank.
