The Maldives sees opportunities to expand the market for its tuna and other fishery products in Bangladesh, High Commissioner Shiuneen Rasheed said at an event showcasing the country’s fishing heritage, cuisine and tourism offerings.
Speaking at “The Great Tuna Gala—Flavors from the Sunny Side,” held at Sheraton Dhaka on October 6, Shiuneen said growing connectivity between the two countries was opening new avenues for cooperation in tourism, trade and business.
The event, organised by the High Commission of the Maldives, brought together approximately 250 guests, including Bangladeshi government officials, diplomats, business leaders, tourism and fisheries stakeholders, and media representatives. Bangladesh’s Minister of Civil Aviation and Tourism, M. Rashiduzzaman Millat, attended as chief guest.
Shiuneen highlighted the ocean’s central role in the Maldives’ economy, island communities and culture, describing fisheries as a vital sector. The High Commissioner also underscored the country’s traditional pole-and-line tuna fishing method, practised for generations, as an expression of its commitment to responsible and sustainable use of marine resources.
Addressing the gathering, Millat said Bangladesh and the Maldives had scope to deepen cooperation in fisheries and tourism, including through collaboration on sustainable fishing practices and tourism development. He also stressed the importance of maintaining close communication to promote tourism and identify further opportunities for cooperation.
The gala featured displays of Maldivian tuna and other fishery products, alongside a live cooking demonstration by Maldivian chef Maha Naseer. Through traditional dishes, Naseer showcased the versatility of tuna and seafood in Maldivian cuisine.
Guests sampled Maldivian food and learned about the country’s fisheries sector, island lifestyle and maritime heritage. The event also presented the Maldives’ tourism attractions, highlighting its natural beauty, hospitality and cultural heritage.
According to the High Commission, the gala aimed to raise awareness of Maldivian fishery products in Bangladesh, explore market expansion and business-to-business partnerships, and promote the Maldives as a destination for Bangladeshi travellers.
