Maldivian appoints Megacap as sales agent in China to boost market presence

Maldivian has appointed MEGACAP Aviation Services Ltd as its General Sales Agent (GSA) for China, in a move aimed at strengthening its presence in one of the Maldives’ most important tourism markets.

The national airline said the partnership marks a significant step in its efforts to enhance connectivity between China and the Maldives, while expanding its reach within the Chinese travel trade.

China continues to be a key source market for Maldivian tourism. According to official figures, 329,110 Chinese visitors travelled to the Maldives last year, representing a 25 percent increase compared to the previous year. China also ranked as the largest single source market, accounting for 14.6 percent of total tourist arrivals.

The growth trend has continued into this year. As of mid-March 2026, 86,464 Chinese tourists have visited the Maldives, contributing 15.6 percent of total arrivals.

Maldivian currently operates weekly flights between Malé and destinations in China using its Airbus A330-200 wide-body aircraft. The service, launched in January 2025, reflects the airline’s renewed focus on the Chinese market and confidence in the continued growth of outbound travel from the country.

Through the appointment of Megacap, the airline aims to increase brand visibility, strengthen partnerships with tour operators, and attract more Chinese travellers to the Maldives.

Maldivian also highlighted that its extensive domestic network — the largest in the country — enables seamless connections for international passengers to resorts, local islands and tourism experiences across the Maldives.

Managing Director Ibrahim Iyas said China remains central to the airline’s international strategy.

“China has long been central to our international strategy, and the appointment of Megacap reflects our long-term commitment to this market,” he said. “We look forward to working closely with Megacap to build stronger trade relationships and to welcome even more Chinese travellers to experience the Maldives.”

Industry observers note that the move could further strengthen Maldives’ position in the competitive Asian tourism market, especially as demand from China continues to rebound strongly.
