Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has signed an MoU with the
Ministry of Economic Development and Trade to begin work on the Kulhudhuffushi
Port Extension Project. The agreement marks a major step toward strengthening
port capacity in the northern region and improving the country’s overall
logistics network.
The project is expected to position Kulhudhuffushi as a key
logistics hub for the northern atolls, helping create a smoother, faster and
more reliable supply chain from north to south. MPL says the extension will
support growing import and shipping activity in the region while reducing
pressure on central ports.
Officials noted that boosting northern port infrastructure
is an important part of the government’s broader plan to enhance economic
activity, improve connectivity between islands and ensure more balanced
national development.
Further details on project timelines and technical
components are expected to be announced once planning and assessments move into
the next stage.
