Registration for this year's Ooredoo fishing race closes tonight at midnight, Ooredoo Maldives said.
The company is holding the event, called "Ooredoo Mas Race," in partnership with the Ministry of Fisheries. This year's race will take place on the 7th of next month in K. Maafushi.
Teams of 12 people, including captains and officials, can take part. Ooredoo said only 20 teams will be accepted this year. If more than 20 teams apply, spots will go to the first 20 teams that complete registration and payment.
Ooredoo is again offering cash prizes. First place will receive MVR 25,000. Second place will receive MVR 10,000. Third place will receive MVR 5,000. The best male and female fisher will each receive MVR 1,000. The person who catches the heaviest fish will also receive MVR 1,000.
Ooredoo said the race draws teams from island community organizations, government institutions, and private individuals every year. The company said the event aims to revive interest in fishing among Maldivians, encourage young people to take up the trade, and promote unity.
