Minister of Finance and Planning Moosa Zameer has assured that scheduled shipments of fuel and cooking gas will continue without disruption despite a sharp rise in global fuel prices.
Speaking at a press briefing held by the Special Cabinet Committee at the President's Office on Monday, Zameer said contingency measures are in place to secure fuel supplies if sourcing from Oman is affected, including arrangements to procure fuel through Singapore.
The Special Cabinet Committee, established in response to ongoing tensions in the Middle East, reiterated that its work will continue without interruption despite the temporary ceasefire.
Zameer also outlined proposed austerity measures aimed at mitigating potential economic strain. He said official overseas travel will be limited to externally funded trips, while State-Owned Enterprises and government offices have been instructed to suspend non-essential spending. He emphasized that essential public services will not be affected.
Committee Chair and Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Abdulla Khaleel said the government remains focused on strengthening food and fuel security, maintaining supply chains, and addressing possible economic challenges.
Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed said recent bottlenecks in clearing goods have been resolved with the support of relevant authorities, with further improvements underway. He added that discussions are ongoing with seven markets to secure imports of essential commodities, along with 23 additional goods.
On preparations for the annual Hajj pilgrimage, Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed confirmed that arrangements are progressing as planned, with the first group of pilgrims scheduled to depart on May 15.
Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim highlighted ongoing collaboration with airlines to promote the Maldives as a destination.
Meanwhile, Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen said some previously suspended flights have resumed, with more airlines expected to restart operations. He noted that air cargo services continue uninterrupted, adding that the government’s current priority is to minimize losses rather than increase flight frequency.
Minister of Higher Education, Labour and Skills Development Dr Ali Haidar Ahmed said the government remains in close contact with Maldivian students in conflict-affected areas and is prepared to take necessary action to ensure their safety.
