Velana International Airport’s new passenger terminal, Terminal 1, officially commenced operations for Singapore Airlines today, marking a significant step in the airport’s phased transition of international carriers to its modernized facilities.
The launch was
commemorated with a special ceremony held at Terminal 1, attended by Dhiraagu’s
Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Ismail Rasheed. Senior
representatives present at the event included Maldives Airports Company Limited
(MACL) CEO and Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, Singapore Airlines
General Manager Haaziq Sulaiman, along with other MACL officials and airline
executives.
As part of the
inaugural celebrations, Singapore Airlines’ dedicated check-in counters at
Terminal 1 were officially opened, while gifts were presented to 205 departing
passengers. A warm cultural welcome was also extended to the 244 passengers
arriving in the Maldives on the airline’s inaugural Terminal 1 flight, SQ432,
featuring traditional performances that highlighted Maldivian hospitality.
The first
Singapore Airlines service to operate from Terminal 1 was an Airbus A350,
marking the first time the new terminal received this aircraft type. The
arrival underscored Terminal 1’s readiness to accommodate modern wide-body
aircraft and enhanced passenger handling capabilities.
Singapore
Airlines first launched flights to the Maldives on March 28, 1984, and has
since remained a key carrier connecting the country with major international
markets. With the addition of Singapore Airlines, Terminal 1 is now serving a
total of 32 airlines.
MACL has
reiterated that the transition to Terminal 1 forms part of its broader
objective to deliver comprehensive, efficient and high-quality services to
airlines and passengers, positioning Velana International Airport as a leading
aviation hub in the region.
