The Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) has paid more than MVR 210 million to fishermen during the first six months of 2026 for fish purchased from across the Maldives, underscoring continued support for the country's fisheries sector.
According to MIFCO, the company purchased 11,959.49 tonnes of fish between January and June, disbursing a total of MVR 210,116,783.06 to local fishermen.
April recorded the highest volume of fish purchases during the six-month period, with 4,414.05 tonnes purchased. During the month alone, MIFCO paid MVR 78.8 million to fishermen, the highest monthly payout of the year.
Monthly payments to fishermen during the period were:
January: MVR 40.4 million
February: MVR 19.1 million
March: MVR 29.4 million
April: MVR 78.8 million
May: MVR 31.1 million
June: MVR 11.3 million
MIFCO said payments for fish deliveries continue to be made within 48 hours, in line with the Government's commitment to ensure fishermen receive timely payments for their catch.
The company also noted that it is currently purchasing an average of 50 tonnes of fish per day, with Lhaviyani Atoll recording the highest level of fishing activity at present.
MIFCO is currently purchasing fish from local fishermen at MVR 20 per kilogram, a rate introduced to provide greater financial support to fishing communities while strengthening the country's fisheries industry.
As the state-owned fisheries company, MIFCO plays a central role in purchasing, processing and exporting Maldivian tuna, with timely payments and stable purchase prices providing important income security for thousands of fishermen and their families across the country.
