Dhiraagu Wins Broadband Telecom Company of the Year at Asian Telecom Awards 2026

Dhiraagu has been awarded ‘Broadband Telecom Company of the Year – Maldives’ at the Asian Telecom Awards 2026, in recognition of achieving 100 percent nationwide fibre broadband coverage across every inhabited island in the country.

The accolade marks a significant milestone for the Maldives’ largest telecommunications provider, reflecting the completion of a nationwide fibre-to-the-home network that now extends to all households across the archipelago. Industry observers note that achieving universal fibre coverage in a geographically dispersed island nation represents a major infrastructure undertaking, both technically and financially.

The Asian Telecom Awards, which recognises innovation, performance and leadership among telecom operators across the region, cited Dhiraagu’s full nationwide fibre rollout as a defining achievement in expanding digital access and strengthening connectivity standards in the Maldives.

According to the company, fibre broadband services are now available to households on every inhabited island, eliminating disparities in fixed broadband access between the capital and outer atolls. The development positions the Maldives among a small group of countries globally to reach full nationwide fibre coverage.

Telecommunications infrastructure has increasingly been viewed as foundational to economic diversification, public service delivery and private sector competitiveness. High speed fibre connectivity supports growth in digital banking, e-commerce, tourism operations, online education and remote healthcare services, particularly for communities located far from Malé.

For businesses operating in the atolls, improved broadband reliability reduces operational constraints and enables cloud-based services, digital payment systems and real-time communication with international partners. For households, fibre connectivity enhances access to government services, educational platforms and digital entertainment.

Dhiraagu stated that the recognition belongs to its network teams and the communities it serves, reaffirming its commitment to connecting and empowering every island. While the award highlights corporate achievement, it also underscores the scale of national investment made in digital infrastructure over the past decade.

The Maldives’ dispersed geography has historically posed challenges to infrastructure development, with high deployment costs and logistical complexity. Completing fibre connectivity to every inhabited island signals a shift in the country’s digital maturity and long-term development trajectory.

As the government advances digital transformation initiatives and promotes knowledge-based economic activity, universal fibre access is expected to play a central role in enabling inclusive growth. The award therefore reflects not only corporate success but also a structural strengthening of the Maldives’ digital backbone, supporting productivity, resilience and competitiveness across the economy.
