Work on the land reclamation and airport development project in Th. Vilufushi officially commenced today with a ceremony attended by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu as part of his visit to the island.
The inauguration
ceremony marked the start of practical work on the long-anticipated project,
which is set to transform connectivity and infrastructure in Thaa Atoll. As
part of the event, an agreement was signed between the Ministry of Finance and
Planning and Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) to oversee the
development and future operation of Vilufushi Airport. The agreement was signed
by Minister of Finance and Planning Moosa Zameer on behalf of the government,
while MACL Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed signed on behalf of the
company.
According to
project details, the new airport will feature a 1,800-meter runway, a fully
equipped passenger terminal, and all supporting facilities required for smooth
airport operations. The development is expected to bring significant benefits
to the community, including improved transport access and economic
opportunities for Vilufushi and surrounding islands.
President
Muizzu, speaking to residents of Vilufushi in a meeting held last night,
stressed the importance of the project for Thaa Atoll and pledged that the
airport would be completed and operational within two years and six months.
