A major step toward expanding air connectivity in Shaviyani Atoll was achieved yesterday as a successful test flight was conducted at Funadhoo Airport, clearing the way for the commencement of night flight operations.
The Maldivian
test flight touched down at the airport at 7:30 pm, carrying senior officials
from Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), the Maldives Civil Aviation
Authority (MCAA), and Island Aviation Services Limited (IASL). Following the
successful operation, the MCAA formally granted approval for night operations
at Funadhoo Airport, marking a significant milestone in the airport’s
development.
The introduction
of night flights forms part of a broader development pledge made by President
Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, who has prioritized the expansion and upgrading of regional
airports to improve connectivity and public services across the country. Under this
commitment, MACL was mandated to implement the development and expansion
project for Funadhoo Airport.
Physical works
under the project were officially launched on October 15, 2025, during
President Muizzu’s visit to the islands of Shaviyani Atoll. At the ceremony,
the President assured residents that the installation of the airfield lighting
system — a critical requirement for night operations — would be completed
before the end of the year, a target now realized with the successful test
flight.
Originally
opened in 2020, Funadhoo Airport is currently undergoing a comprehensive
upgrade aimed at enhancing both capacity and passenger experience. The
development includes the construction of a modern passenger lounge and
restaurant, improvements to terminal facilities, installation of a baggage
conveyor belt system, and the extension of the runway to support more efficient
and flexible operations.
The commencement
of night operations is expected to significantly improve accessibility to
Funadhoo and surrounding islands, strengthen domestic air connectivity, and
support economic and social development in the atoll.
