President pledges completion and handover of major housing projects within term

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to completing and handing over major housing projects to beneficiaries before the end of the current five-year term.

Addressing the official ceremony held at the Social Centre to mark the Maldives’ 61st Independence Day, the President outlined the government’s progress in tackling the country’s housing challenges and expanding opportunities for home ownership.

President Muizzu said the administration is working to ensure that land plots allocated from reclaimed lagoons are handed over to their rightful recipients.

He noted that all plots allocated from Hulhumalé Phase II have already been handed over, while preparations are underway to issue plots from Hulhumalé Phase III once reclamation work is completed.

The President also highlighted progress in Gulhifalhu, where land plots are being handed over, and at Giraavarufalhu, where reclamation work is continuing. He said the ongoing works are expected to be completed within the next two to three months.

President Muizzu further pointed to the successful completion of the Fahi Dhiriulhun housing project, which had been only 25 percent complete when the current administration assumed office.

Under his administration, the remaining work was completed and the housing units were handed over to the rightful recipients, marking a significant milestone in the government’s efforts to deliver housing solutions.

The President also highlighted Rasmaalé, the administration’s largest housing and urban development initiative, as a key project aimed at ensuring housing opportunities for Maldivians.

He announced that reclamation work for Rasmaalé is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

“By the end of this term, God willing, our hope and assurance is that, for the first time in Maldivian history, housing projects will be physically completed and handed over to their recipients within a single government term,” President Muizzu said.

Under the government’s housing programme, 15,000 land plots will be allocated from Rasmaalé, while 7,800 flats will be developed across the Greater Malé region.

Applications for the land plots and flats closed on the 15th of last month, and the President has previously announced that the lists of eligible recipients will be published before the end of this year.

The government has also awarded contracts to several companies for the construction of flats under the scheme, demonstrating continued progress towards fulfilling the administration’s housing commitments.
