Velana International Airport’s new passenger terminal, Terminal 1, officially commenced operations for Discover Airlines today, marking another milestone in the phased activation of the airport’s expanded facilities.
The commencement
was commemorated with a special ceremony held at Terminal 1, where Discover
Airlines’ inaugural arrival was welcomed with a traditional water salute.
Passengers arriving on the flight were warmly received, reflecting the
Maldives’ hospitality as the airline begins operating from the new terminal.
The official
welcome was led by Managing Director of Road Development Corporation (RDC)
Ibrahim Nazim, alongside Deputy Managing Director of Maldives Airports Company
Limited (MACL) Mujthaba Latheef, together with other senior MACL executives.
During the ceremony, Discover Airlines’ dedicated check-in counters at Terminal
1 were formally opened, signifying the start of the airline’s full passenger
operations from the facility.
Airport
officials noted that the addition of Discover Airlines further strengthens
Terminal 1’s role as a key gateway for international travel to the Maldives.
With the airline’s transition, the total number of carriers now operating from
the new terminal has increased to 31.
Terminal 1 forms
part of Velana International Airport’s broader development programme aimed at
enhancing passenger capacity, improving service standards, and accommodating
the steady growth in international air traffic. MACL has stated that more
airlines are expected to be gradually moved to the new terminal as operations
continue to expand.
