SME Digital Odin Rashah, a new open-water swimming series organised by Swim Maldives, has launched in Vilimalé as the first stop in a planned nationwide series.
The inaugural event, held on 3 October 2026, attracted 25 teams and 50 individual swimmers. All 50 individual participation slots were filled within 24 hours of registration opening.
The competition uses a format inspired by traditional Maldivian island life, with participants starting from a boat anchored offshore and swimming approximately 500 metres towards the island.
Before harbours and jetties became widespread across the Maldives, boats often anchored offshore and people had to swim the final distance to reach islands. Swim Maldives said the series aims to introduce a new generation to this aspect of the country’s relationship with the ocean.
Following the Vilimalé event, Odin Rashah is planned to travel to islands across the Maldives, with the organisers aiming to bring together communities and swimmers from different parts of the country.
SME Digital is the title sponsor of the series.
