Velana International Airport Named Indian Ocean’s Leading Airport 2026

VIA was selected from a field that included airports in Madagascar, Réunion, Seychelles and Mauritius.

Velana International Airport (VIA) has been named Indian Ocean’s Leading Airport 2026 at the World Travel Awards. It is the 13th time the Maldives’ main international gateway has received the title.

The award was presented at the Asia, Oceania & Indian Ocean Gala Ceremony at CROSSROADS Maldives on 27 September. Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, CEO and Managing Director of airport operator Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), accepted it on VIA’s behalf.

VIA was selected from a field that included airports in Madagascar, Réunion, Seychelles and Mauritius.

“This recognition reflects the dedication of our team, the continued progress we are making at Velana International Airport, and the valuable contribution of our partners who continue to support and work alongside us,” Shareef said. “As the Maldives’ main gateway, we remain focused on raising standards, enhancing the passenger experience and positioning VIA as a modern, efficient and globally competitive airport.”

MACL said it will continue improving the airport’s services and facilities as passenger demand grows.
