STO introduces pocket-sized ultrasound devices to Maldives

State Trading Organisation (STO) has introduced GE Healthcare’s portable Vscan ultrasound devices to the Maldives, expanding access to compact diagnostic imaging technology.

The devices were launched at a ceremony held at Hotel Jen by STO CEO and Managing Director Shimad Ibrahim and GE Healthcare Sales Head for South Asia Jagdish Babu.

According to STO, the pocket-sized ultrasound models are designed to bring scanning services beyond traditional consultation rooms and closer to patients.

STO’s healthcare team said the devices could be particularly useful in expanding ultrasound services to smaller islands across the Maldives, where access to larger diagnostic equipment may be limited.

The Vscan models can connect to Apple and Android smartphones as well as laptops, and allow scanned images to be shared using the DICOM medical imaging standard.

GE Healthcare ultrasound systems are already widely used in healthcare facilities across the Maldives, with STO serving as the authorised distributor for the brand.

STO said its biomedical team has also trained and deployed dedicated engineers to provide after-sales support for GE Healthcare equipment in the country.

The company currently has certified engineers for several medical imaging modalities, including MRI, CT, mammography and ultrasound. The team also includes Maldivian female engineers.

STO said the introduction of the portable ultrasound devices forms part of its wider efforts to bring specialised and innovative medical technology to the Maldives and strengthen healthcare services across the country.
