Maldivian, the national airline of the Maldives, has introduced new safety guidelines for carrying and using power banks on its flights, becoming the first local airline to implement such protocols. The move aims to enhance passenger, crew, and aircraft safety, aligning with international aviation standards.
The updated rules reflect recommendations from major global aviation bodies, including the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), and International Air Transport Association (IATA). By adopting these measures, Maldivian reinforces its commitment to operational safety and best practices.
Under the new guidelines:
Each passenger may carry a maximum of two power banks.
Power banks must not exceed 100 watt-hours (Wh) in capacity.
Devices must be kept on the passenger—in a seat pocket or under the seat.
Storing power banks in overhead bins or checked luggage is strictly prohibited.
Charging devices or recharging power banks during the flight is not allowed.
To avoid short circuits or unintentional activation, power banks must be in original packaging or have insulated terminals, such as being taped or placed in a protective pouch or bag.
All power banks must comply with the UN Manual of Tests and Criteria, Part III, subsection 38.3.
Maldivian emphasized that these rules are part of a broader effort to maintain safety while aligning with global best practices. The airline urged passengers to comply with the guidelines to ensure a smooth and secure travel experience.
As the national carrier continues to expand its services across domestic and regional destinations, the introduction of such safety measures marks another step toward modernizing operational protocols in line with global standards.
