US and Maldives discuss broader economic cooperation as ties mark 60 years

The United States and the Maldives have discussed exploring expanded cooperation in economic development, investment, and maritime security, the President's Office said on Tuesday.

The discussion took place when US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Paul Kapur paid a courtesy call on President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu at the President's Office. The meeting took place on the morning of 24 June.

Kapur said the United States was interested in broadening cooperation in areas of mutual interest, according to the President's Office. These included economic development, increased investments, and maritime security.

President Muizzu said the Maldives remained open to development initiatives that bring tangible benefits and help diversify the economy. He linked this position to the government's Maldives First foreign policy.

The two sides noted that this year marks 60 years of formal diplomatic relations between the Maldives and the United States. They discussed ways to strengthen the friendship and cooperation built over the past six decades.

Both sides closed the meeting by affirming their shared interest in continuing to work together for mutual benefit, the President's Office said.
