Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has officially operationalized Terminal 2 at Velana International Airport (VIA) as the dedicated terminal for all domestic departures and arrivals, marking a major milestone in the airport’s ongoing infrastructure expansion.
The transition, which came into effect this week, consolidates all domestic flight operations under Terminal 2, aiming to improve efficiency and enhance the overall passenger experience. The move forms part of broader development efforts to modernize facilities and accommodate the growing demand for inter-island air travel across the Maldives.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Vice President Uz. Hussain Mohamed Latheef, alongside Cabinet Ministers, members of the MACL Board, the Executive Committee, senior management, and airport staff who played a key role in facilitating the successful transfer of domestic services to the newly designated terminal.
According to MACL, the introduction of a dedicated domestic terminal is expected to streamline passenger flow and reduce congestion, while offering travelers a more organized and convenient airport experience. With domestic connectivity continuing to expand, the new arrangement is designed to support increasing passenger volumes and operational efficiency.
Terminal 2 is equipped with a range of amenities aimed at elevating comfort for domestic travelers. Families passing through the terminal can make use of a dedicated children’s play area, while expanded food and beverage outlets are now available within the boarding area. These include internationally recognized brands such as Costa Coffee, Dairy Queen, and Gloria Jean's Coffees.
In addition, newly developed prayer rooms have been introduced to ensure inclusive facilities that cater to the diverse needs of passengers travelling through VIA.
MACL stated that the operationalization of Terminal 2 will enable more efficient handling of domestic passengers while reinforcing the airport’s commitment to delivering a smoother and more structured travel process.
Passengers travelling on domestic flights have been advised to proceed directly to Terminal 2 and to confirm flight details with their respective airlines prior to arrival at the airport.
