Velana
International Airport (VIA) has successfully completed a specialised training
programme for employees who will operate the new passenger boarding bridges at
the soon-to-be-opened passenger terminal, marking a major step in the
terminal’s readiness ahead of its official opening on 26th July 2025.
The passenger
boarding bridges, an entirely new service in the Maldives will allow passengers
to embark and disembark aircraft directly from the terminal building without
the need for buses, offering greater convenience and safety. This feature
represents a significant upgrade in passenger experience and operational
efficiency at VIA.
A total of 46
employees have been trained to handle the boarding bridges. Notably, 14 of
these staff members underwent advanced overseas training in Malaysia, gaining
exposure to international industry standards and best practices. The training
programme focused on equipping staff with the technical knowledge and
operational skills required to safely and efficiently operate the boarding
bridges.
In addition to
classroom sessions, employees also undertook simulator-based training to
familiarise themselves with real-time operations, ensuring they are fully
prepared for the launch of the new system. The initiative underscores VIA’s
commitment to operational excellence as the Maldives moves towards expanding
its aviation infrastructure and enhancing its status as a global travel hub.
The opening of
the new terminal and the introduction of passenger boarding bridges represent a
transformative moment for the country’s main international gateway, promising
improved passenger flow, increased safety, and a world-class airport
experience.
