Malaysia to Provide USD 100 Million Facility to Maldives, Says PM Anwar Ibrahim

The Malaysian leader also pledged to address visa difficulties faced by parents of Maldivian students and challenges encountered by patients seeking treatment in Malaysia.

Malaysia will arrange a USD 100 million financial facility for the Maldives following a request from the Maldivian government, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced during his official visit to the country.

Speaking at a joint press statement with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, Anwar said the President had raised several matters requiring the Malaysian government’s consideration.

Among them was a request from the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) for a USD 100 million facility from Malaysia’s central bank, Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM).

Anwar confirmed that he had agreed to arrange the facility and called on the two central banks to expedite the necessary preparations.

The Malaysian government will also respond positively to several other requests made by the Maldives, he said.

Addressing difficulties faced by parents seeking to remain in Malaysia while their children study there, Anwar described the matter as a bureaucratic issue rather than one of government policy. He said it would be submitted for consideration at Malaysia’s upcoming Cabinet meeting.

Anwar added that his government would seek similar solutions to challenges faced by Maldivians travelling to Malaysia for medical treatment.

The commitments form part of efforts by the two countries to strengthen bilateral cooperation and address practical issues affecting Maldivians in Malaysia.
