Saying “Happy Teachers’ Day” cannot fully express our appreciation for your work. But perhaps it is a good place to begin.

Dear Teachers,
One afternoon, a teacher waited as parents arrived to collect their children. One by one, the children went home, until only one remained.
Fifteen minutes passed. Then twenty. The teacher called the child’s parents, but there was no answer. As the wait grew longer, the child became sad and worried.
Knowing where the child lived, the teacher spoke in a gentle, reassuring voice: “Let’s go home.”
And the teacher took the child home.
It is a simple story, but it captures something we do not acknowledge often enough: your care extends far beyond the classroom. So much of what you do happens quietly, without an audience or an expectation of thanks.
Saying “Happy Teachers’ Day” cannot fully express our appreciation for your work. But perhaps it is a good place to begin.
I was once a little boy, unsure of my abilities and unaware of my talents. I had little idea of what I could do, let alone who I might become. Like my parents, my teachers believed in me before I knew how to believe in myself.
You recognised abilities I had yet to discover. You nurtured them with patience, encouragement and effort. You believed in us, guided us through our uncertainties and watched us grow into adults who could face the world.
I know you did not always have the resources you needed. Yet you found ways to make the most of what was available, preparing lessons and creating opportunities for us to learn.
Your work did not end when the bell rang. Beyond the classroom were lessons to prepare, assignments to mark and students whose needs stayed on your mind long after the school day was over.
There were days when you felt unwell. There were days when your own lives were difficult. We may not have understood what you were carrying, but we benefited from the care and effort you continued to give.
After five days of teaching, some of you spent your weekends helping students who needed extra support. You attended school activities and gave up time you could have spent resting or being with your families. We did not always notice those sacrifices then. Looking back, I appreciate them more deeply.
I believe your commitment comes from a desire to help others learn, grow and find their way. That commitment deserves our gratitude, as well as fair pay, adequate resources and respect for your time.
To every teacher who taught me, encouraged me or helped me through a difficult moment: thank you. And to everyone who has taught me something, however simple it may have seemed, please know that it mattered.
Your influence lives on in the confidence we gained, the choices we make and the kindness we show others. We may forget individual lessons, but we remember how you made us feel—and the possibilities you helped us see.
Happy Teachers’ Day.
With love and gratitude,
A grateful student
