Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) today celebrated the arrival of the Maldives’ one millionth tourist of the year at Velana International Airport (VIA), marking a significant milestone for the nation’s tourism and aviation industries.
The one millionth visitor, a tourist from Spain, arrived in the Maldives on a Qatar Airways flight from Doha and was accorded a warm welcome upon arrival during a special ceremony held at Velana International Airport.
The event was attended by the Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation, Hon. Mohamed Ameen; State Ministers from the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation; MACL Chief Commercial Officer Mohamed Mihad; Chief Emergency Service Officer Abdulla Waheed; Controller General of Immigration (Retd.) Ahmed Faseeh; CEO and Managing Director of Visit Maldives, Ibrahim Shiuree; members of the Visit Maldives Board; tourism stakeholders; airline partners; and representatives from across the aviation and tourism sectors.
As part of the celebrations, the one millionth tourist received a special welcome and commemorative gifts from MACL and tourism industry partners, reflecting the renowned hospitality of the Maldives and the strong collaboration between the country’s aviation and tourism sectors.
Speaking on the occasion, officials highlighted the importance of the achievement as a testament to the continued strength and resilience of Maldivian tourism, as well as the collective efforts of industry stakeholders in attracting visitors from around the world.
Velana International Airport continues to serve as the Maldives’ primary international gateway, playing a pivotal role in facilitating tourism growth and enhancing connectivity. MACL remains committed to improving airport operations, elevating the passenger experience, and supporting the sustainable development of the nation’s aviation and tourism industries.
MACL expressed its appreciation to the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation, Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC/Visit Maldives), airline partners, Maldives Immigration, Maldives Customs Service, Aviation Security Command, ground handlers, resort operators, service providers, and all airport stakeholders whose continued support and cooperation contributed to this national achievement.
The milestone underscores the Maldives’ enduring appeal as a world-class destination and highlights the vital role of aviation in supporting the country’s economic growth and tourism success.
