Imports to Kulhudhuffushi City Commercial Port will no longer be subject to duty payments, Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed announced, marking a significant step in expanding trade services in the northern Maldives.
The decision
follows a recent agreement between Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) and the
Ministry of Economic Development and Trade to enhance the range of services
provided at Kulhudhuffushi Port. The expansion includes newly launched
facilities for storing general cargo, construction materials, food items, and
essential goods, with provisions for duty-free storage.
Speaking to PSM,
Minister Saeed highlighted the benefits for businesses, noting that the removal
of import duties allows companies to allocate funds previously spent on fees to
other operational needs. Goods can be stored in the duty-free zone without
importing, and can also be re-exported to other countries, he explained,
adding that MPL will establish zones where value can be added to stored goods
before re-export.
The new services
at Kulhudhuffushi Port include the creation of a bonded area for duty-free
storage, a special bulk storage zone for construction materials like aggregate
and sand, a bonded warehouse service for northern tourist resorts, and a
dedicated unloading area for domestic traders to facilitate distribution across
the atolls.
Minister Saeed
emphasized that the initiative reflects President Dr. Muizzu’s vision of
expanding similar services across northern, southern, and maritime ports.
According to MPL, the upgraded facilities are expected to reinforce
Kulhudhuffushi City’s role as a regional trade hub, while promoting sustainable
development, food security, and increased business activities throughout the
Maldives.
