President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has welcomed the United Kingdom’s decision to suspend tariffs on tuna imports beginning 20 May 2026, describing the move as a major boost for the Maldives’ fisheries sector and the national economy.
The announcement was highlighted by British High Commissioner to the Maldives Nick Low in a post on X, where he said the decision would benefit both British consumers and Maldivian fishermen.
“Great news for British shoppers and Maldivian fishermen. The UK is suspending tariffs on tuna, helping bring prices down in the UK while opening better market access for Maldivian tuna. A win for affordability and sustainable tuna, caught one fish at a time,” Low said.
Responding on X, President Muizzu said the development would strengthen the Maldives’ fisheries industry and support communities that depend on the sector.
“This important development will support British consumers while delivering meaningful benefits to the Maldives’ fisheries sector, strengthening fishermen’s incomes, supporting island livelihoods, and expanding opportunities for sustainably caught Maldivian tuna in the UK market,” the President said.
President Muizzu also highlighted the Maldives’ international reputation for sustainable fishing practices, particularly its pole-and-line tuna fishing industry.
“The Maldives is globally recognised for its world-leading pole-and-line tuna industry and its commitment to responsible and sustainable fishing practices,” he said.
The President added that the tariff suspension reflects the strong partnership between the Maldives and the United Kingdom, as well as both countries’ commitment to sustainable trade and economic resilience.
“I thank the UK Government and all partners who contributed to this positive step forward for our fishermen and our economy,” he added.
The fisheries sector remains one of the Maldives’ most important industries, providing employment and income for communities across the country while contributing significantly to export earnings.
