Bank of Maldives (BML) has secured a place on Forbes’ World’s Top Performing Banks 2026 list, marking a major achievement for the bank and the Maldivian financial sector.
Compiled by Forbes in partnership with market research firm Statista, the inaugural ranking features 500 banks from 89 countries. BML’s inclusion brings international recognition to a homegrown institution that plays a central role in supporting the Maldivian economy.
The achievement reinforces BML’s strong financial performance, robust risk management and sustainable growth, highlighting the strength of its foundations in a rapidly changing global banking environment.
The ranking assessed banks across four key areas: profitability, growth and revenue quality, capital and funding strength, and asset quality and efficiency. It drew on financial data providers, publicly available bank reports and independent research.
BML was recognised in Tier 6, which covers banks with total assets between USD 3 billion and USD 10 billion. Its performance was assessed against financial institutions of comparable size worldwide, giving the recognition particular significance as an international benchmark of the bank’s strength.
For the Maldives, this milestone showcases the ability of a national institution to earn a place among leading banking performers around the world. It also highlights BML’s continued contribution to businesses, households and communities through its banking network, financing services and investment in digital banking.
Commenting on the achievement, BML CEO and Managing Director Mohamed Shareef said that this award is a ranking based on financial metrics, benchmarking us against banks of our size across the globe.
"This listing reaffirms what is consistently reflected in our performance: that BML is a strong institution built on a healthy capital base and sound management. It demonstrates that our customers can bank with absolute confidence and validates the growth we deliver to our shareholders.”
Shareef reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to the Maldivian economy, including strengthening its foundations, investing in people and technology, and supporting the success of businesses and communities.
As the national bank, BML continues to help Maldivians pursue their ambitions by expanding access to financial services and facilitating economic activity across the country.
This global recognition marks a proud moment for BML and the Maldives, giving fresh momentum to the bank’s commitment to customers, shareholders and the nation’s progress.
